The Department of Music at Christopher Newport University is composed of 10 full-time and 20 adjunct faculty. The department offers the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in composition, music education, and performance, the Bachelor of Arts degree in music studies, and creative studies, and the Master of Arts in Teaching degree with concentrations in instrumental and choral music education. Entrance into the music degree programs is highly selective, although the department welcomes students from all disciplines into its many courses, ensembles, and organizations. The music majors, around 100, were leaders in their high schools and are thoroughly engaged in both their major and in the professional and social organizations within and beyond the department. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the University recognizes the Department of Music as one of its outstanding programs. The arts are housed within the $60 million, I.M. Pei-designed Ferguson Center for the Arts, bringing to Virginia the finest performing artists in the world. The area of Hampton Roads is home to The Virginia Symphony, the Virginia Opera Association, military bands, and several other professional and community organizations and ensembles.
